To recycle we must separate our
waste.
Organic – food that biodegrades.
Recyclable – paper, glass, bottles, cans, etc.
Compounds – clothes, toys
Hazardous – medicines, sprays, batteries, etc.
§Unrecycled waste goes to a landfill site. Plastics can take 500 years to decompose!
§Other
waste
goes
to a treatment plant and is separated.
§Each
type
of waste
is
then
manufactured into a new product.
Write the definition for these key words (you can use the internet if you like):
Battery = energy stored in a small
bar form
Landfill site = The place where
waste
goes
that
cannot be recycled
Treatment plant = The place where
recyclable waste goes to be recycled
Biodegrade = What
organic waste does when it decomposes
Decompose = When waste breaks down
Manufacture = To produce a product
Find
out
on
the
internet what
we
should do with these products when we don’t need them any more:
§Cooking oil – it can be recycled into biodiesel (a fuel). Place it
a bottle and take it to an oil recycling bin. Before you throw it away you can reuse several times.
§Out
of date medicine – The
container can be recycled with plastics. You can take it back to some
pharmacies. If you do throw it away put it in a small
bag with
other
rubbish.
§Batteries – Take them to a battery bin
§Old furniture – You can sell it second hand. Ring a company to take it away.
§Old phones – Sell them to a company on the internet. You
could
sell
or
give
them
away
(reuse)
§Clothes – Donate them to a charity or put them in a clothes container
When you have done all of this you can go to the quizlet page https://quizlet.com/172931247/human-impact-on-the-environment-flash-cards/
