Summative A Exam Feedback

1. Tell me about Europe's land relief in general.
To get full marks you have to have mentioned:
uEurope is in the Northern Hemisphere
uIt is the second smallest continent in the world after Oceania
uThe natural borders are: The Arctic Ocean (North), The Ural Mountains/Asia (East), The Mediterranean Sea (South), The Atlantic Ocean (West)

2. Does the physical relief of an area influence where people live?
To get full marks you have to have mentioned:
uHumans live near rivers because: they can get water to drink, use water to cultivate crops, fish for food.
uHumans live on plains because: it is much easier to build here (e.g. houses and roads), the land is good for growing crops, animals can be kept.
uHumans don’t usually live in mountains because: the climate is extreme, transport is very difficult.
uThe majority of people in Europe live in the Great European Plain

3. Explain why two European rivers are important.
Rhine.
u1230km long, 880km navigable.

Spain's Rivers and lakes
uSpain’s rivers are short and irregular.
uMany reservoirs have been constructed along them.
uTwo factors influence the rivers:
1. Land relief – Does the river start near or far from the sea?
2. Climate – If a river passes through a rainy region, it will have more water e.g. the Ebro.
uThere are three watersheds in Spain: Atlantic, Cantabrian and Mediterranean.

uThere are no rivers in the Canary or Balearic Islands.
uThe biggest is Lake Sanabria in Castille-Leon
uThere are many dams and reservoirs. Dam = a wall to stop water passing  Reservoir = a natural or artificial lake that stores water.
uAtlantic – Includes Galician rivers, which are short with lots of water, and other longer Atlantic rivers.
uCantabrian – River flow into the Bay of Biscay. They come from mountains close to the sea and have high volumes.
uMediterranean – Except for the Ebro, rivers are short, shallow and irregular.
uCanary Islands – barrancos
uBalearic Islands - torrentes

Open a word document and find an image in google of the following places. Save the file and "rivers and lakes of Spain" and put it in your social science folder.
